What can a pair of pulsating, high-waisted ski pants do for you, really? Maybe take the place of a dozen masseuses trained in the fine art of water retention, relieve that heavy ankle feeling after a long flight, and ease digestion? For starters.

The Ballancer Pro has become a go-to recovery fix for pro athletes, as well as celebrities like Jennifer Aniston and Zac Efron. It is the latest version of an old­ school spa remedy: the lymphatic drainage massage. Except instead of being done manually by one person to drain excess fluid in the body, the massage is given by a pair of programmable, inflatable pants that extend from your stomach to your ankles.

“My goal is to live to 180 or more.” That is the calling card of Dave Asprey. The founder of Seattle-based Bulletproof 360 Inc. (the enterprise behind the coffee, nutritional supplements, a podcast and more) has spent a couple decades developing his own digitized home gym in Victoria, Canada, packed with about $2 million worth of cutting-edge equipment. That’s according to Martin Tobias, CEO of Upgrade Labs, Asprey’s brand of newfangled, high-tech workout facilities designed to boost mental and physical performance at a cellular level. The first Bulletproof Upgrade Labs opened last October in Santa Monica and now THR has learned exclusively that a spinoff tailored to travelers will debut next month inside The Beverly Hilton.

Clients at what Asprey dubs “the world’s first human upgrade center” include Gerard Butler and Matthew Modine, Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel, life coach Tony Robbins, legendary record producer Rick Rubin, musician Meghan Trainor, Pro Football Hall of Famer Terrell Owens, WWE senior vp Kristin Prouty and pro wrestler Nikki Bella.

“At Upgrade Labs, you can train multiple modes in your body that are all quantifiably related to your ability to have a healthy, productive life,” says Tobias, explaining that the customized, data-driven workouts hit an innovative sweet spot that straddles fitness and health care. “It’s not just about how you look in the mirror. It’s about how your brain works, your motivation, levels of energy and stress and inflammation.”

The company uniquely combines technologies for maximum impact, tracks data over time (complete with an on-site medical lab and doctor in Santa Monica for baseline blood testing) and offers access to over 15 machines. Each costs from $50,000 to $350,000, so only the 1 percent had access until now. Think pro sports teams, the Navy SEALS, NASA, and guys like Robbins and Peter Diamandis, founder of the Xprize foundation focused on tech developments that benefit humanity.

Upgrade Lab trainers refer to themselves as “biohacker techs,” a nod to digital efficiencies that compress the equivalent of a multi-hour workout into a matter of minutes and expedite the body’s physical and cognitive recovery. That’s why the concept makes sense for globe-trotting hotel clients looking to squeeze in gym time and quick fixes for fatigue, stress, jet leg and rundown immune systems that get them back up to speed.

For workouts under 30 minutes, the Beverly Hills location will add an electro-muscular stimulation machine and a state-of-the-art stationary bike that utilizes adaptive intelligence to personalize rides. A new infrared sauna targets detoxification and red carpet-ready beauty treatments are in the works — possibly vitamin infusions and skin-tightening cryofacials that “make the face look two or three years younger in five minutes,” says Tobias.

For the highly productive woman who wants to try it all but is short on time and patience, there is the Bossavy Institute, a gleaming and minimal 4,000-square-foot space opening this fall just east of the Barneys flagship.

The woman behind it, Dominique Bossavy, is the Los Angeles-based tattoo guru who will now flip between the coasts (when she’s not in her home country of France, where she is booked through November 2019). While she jokes that she has recently been pinch-hitting as a general contractor (and has the oversized mansard windows and ceramic floors to show for it), the technique she is really known for is NanoColor Infusion, a way of depositing semi-permanent color on the face and body to re-create the look of skin and hair. She uses it to do everything from bulk up thin eyebrows and restore flush pink tones to the lips to hide scars and stretch marks by matching them to one’s skin color and texture and even create trompe l’oeil nipples on post-mastectomy patients.

While her services will be on offer every 10 days or so (she is taking appointments now for December), it is far from the only item on the menu. “In New York, the women still have to take care of themselves, but they don’t want to spend three hours doing it,” she says.

The concept has been built so that multiple services can be performed at once, so you can get an IV for a hangover or jet lag while also lying in an LED light bed for what Bossavy calls “anti-aging on steroids.” “It removes inflammation, it boosts your metabolism, promotes blood circulation, activates your collagen in your cells,” says Bossavy. “When you come out of this, if you have any pain, it’s gone. And you’re glowing, you’re beaming. It’s feeling like you’re in the womb.”

Additional services on offer include sessions with the Ballancer Pro, an inflatable jacket or pair of pants that uses air pressure to move excess fluid out of the body, not unlike an automated lymphatic drainage massage with 10 hands at once. More traditional spa services like facials and therapeutic massages are available, as are dermatologist go-tos like facial injections and non-invasive fat removal.

New Bossavy Institute Spa Opens in New York City – Robb Report

When Londoners look to up their complexion game, one name is traded back and forth, sotto voce: Teresa Tarmey, the facialist behind the lit-from-within glows of Kate Moss, Sienna Miller, Naomie Harris, and a gaggle of It Brits too numerous to name. But now, Manhattanites in need of a pre-fall refresh are the ones in luck. This week, Tarmey lands stateside with a new outpost in Tribeca.

While Tarmey’s Kensington clinic is full of art deco details, her new Duane Street space—a former Pilates studio—is a departure with its white-washed brick walls. Acrylic shelves are lined with her namesake skin-care products, as well as Modern Botany’s U.K.-made natural deodorants, Cire Trudon candles, and stacks of photography books from the likes of Helmut Newton and Guy Bourdin. The one detail that’s perfectly in sync with her London atelier? Its intimate jewel-box size; with only three treatment rooms, a wait-list is bound to ensue.

New Yorkers who are lucky enough to snap up an appointment will discover Tarmey’s highly customized approach to skin-care, which emphasizes signature results (rejuvenated, red carpet–ready complexions), not formulaic steps. “There’s really no such thing as a TT facial,” insists Tarmey, as she adjusts a black-and-white print of David Bowie hanging on the wall. “I go along and I might see a broken capillary, so I would sack it with a laser, or I might see you have scarring from some spots 10 years ago and I’d be like, ‘Do you mind if we do a little bit of fractional radiofrequency?’ ” she explains of her targeted treatments, which could also include a massage with hyaluronic acid, a “nice and brightening” lactic acid peel, plumping microneedling, and the use of her sculpting cryotherapy ball. Also on offer will be the Ballancerpro, an inflating compression full-body pantsuit (practically made for Instagram), which is said to encourage lymphatic drainage, increase circulation, and reduce swelling. It has already been tested by one New York Knicks player—not to mention a handful of Fashion Week–bound editors eager to erase signs of this summer’s sins.

Tarmey will return to London in time for the kick-off of the European collections—her A-list clientele wouldn’t have it any other way—but she will soon be spending the majority of her time in Manhattan, where she’s currently real estate shopping for an apartment to call home. “I figured if I’m going to make a go of this, I’d better be here,” she says with a smile. Lined with 24 individual air chambers which compress and deflate in a range of different ways along feet, legs, bum and stomach, they mimic the effect of a manual lymphatic massage to boost both circulation and the lymphatic system. The fact that the treatment’s machine-operated too, provides greater consistency in pressure and technique than a more hands-on approach.

Its list of claims is impressive: by stimulating the circulatory and lymphatic systems, it seeks to speed along the elimination of wastes and toxins from the body to reduce fluid retention and puffiness in as little as a single session, reduce cellulite by increasing the supply of oxygenated blood to tissues (it’s not uncommon to find celebs in the US booking in for it a few days prior to a big event) and reduce lactic acid build-up post-workout to aid faster recovery.

It also helps to relieve tension in tightness hotspots such as the hips, thighs and buttocks – a common side-effect of our increasingly sedentary lifestyles and a problem I know only too well about. Spending roughly seven hours a day at my desk and three hours sat down during my commute (the only time getting a seat can be a bad thing) has left me more rigid than a plank of wood and my hips and thighs feeling tired and stiff. Myself and my heavy legs couldn’t wait to book in.

WHAT WAS THE TREATMENT LIKE?

Donning a fetching pair of disposable trousers, each of my legs were snuggly strapped into their inflatable cocoons. The machine was then calibrated to provide a three-phase massage routine best suited to my needs. As it was my first time, a gentle pressure was selected – just close-fitting enough to feel tight without being uncomfortable.

The first phase, the Wave cycle, provided a steady sequence of compressions from my feet up to my breast bone to help aid drainage. The second, the Slim cycle, was slightly more rhythmic and designed to sculpt. The last, the Ballancer, was faster-paced and more stimulating to get my blood really flowing. It was incredibly relaxing – so much so that I nearly dropped off.

THE VERDICT?

To be honest, I was skeptical about what could realistically be achieved in 35 minutes. But afterwards, my legs had shed their prior heaviness, and the tightness I usually hold in my hips and thighs had significantly reduced. I wouldn’t say that it made differences to my cellulite or made my legs hugely slimmer, the biggest gains were regarding my mobility. I’d liken the results to how I feel after a Vinyasa flow class – I was a little more pliable and much more relaxed, (I slept like a baby that night).

The only downside I feel is the price. Costing £175 for a 30-minute session, keeping the Body Ballancer trouser habit up may well bankrupt me. I did leave my appointment though Googling where I could buy a pair (I wouldn’t take them off if I owned one). Its tech and ability to cure my case of leg fatigue certainly impressed though. It’s actually recommended to clients of EF Medispa who’ve undergone liposculpture procedures as part of their post-operative care to reduce bruising and swelling. Perhaps for my less pressing needs though, actual yoga classes, making a conscious effort to be more active during my working day to boost my lymphatic system and foam rolling are probably sufficient for now.
